Till about the seventeenth century, it was generally believed that the Deluge had been geographically universal, and this opinion is defended even in our days by some

pittoresques d’entre eux est assurément le déluge qu’à connu Noé. Le
livre de la Genèse (chapitres 6 à 8) rapporte en effet qu’un déluge
de
portée mondiale s’est produit dans une période qu’on situe à peu près à 4000 ou 5 000 ans avant J.-C.
